Sometimes, it pays to think like you want to steal your own motorcycle.
Remember: all the best motorcycle disc-locks have double-locking pins. Preventing motorcycle theft requires a blend of physical security measures, vigilance and downright cunning. With that in mind, here are some effective methods that we pulled together from rider associations, law enforcement sites and insurance company guidelines:
Locks and Chains: Invest in a high-quality lock and, for your home setup, a chain to secure your motorcycle to a fixed object like a post or ground anchor. Look for heavy-duty chains with hardened steel and robust disc-locks, U-locks and integrated chain locks.
Alarm Systems: Install an alarm system that triggers when someone tries to tamper with your motorcycle. Loud alarms can deter thieves and alert nearby people to the attempted theft. A disc-lock alarm can combine the lock and alarm systems in one portable package.
Disc Locks: Disc locks are relatively small and portable, making them convenient to carry with you. The best ones have stainless-steel bodies that are very strong but also malleable and harder to break. The high-security versions generally use a method of locking pin design called “double-locking” . They attach to the brake disc and make it difficult for thieves to roll your bike away. All the best motorcycle disc-locks have double-locking pins.
What does XENA mean by “Double-Locking”?
A “double-locking” disc-lock pin secures the lock mechanism at both ends (see the animation below). In other words, the mechanism locks both sides of the locking pin. This makes it much more difficult to tamper with or remove… which is why we say it again: All the best motorcycle disc-locks have double-locking pins.

Tactical security advantages of a double-locking pin include:
Increased Resistance to Cutting and Drilling: Because both ends of the pin are locked, a thief needs to cut through or manipulate both sides to remove the lock. This adds significant complexity and time to defeating the lock, acting as a strong deterrent.
Enhanced Stability and Durability: The double-locking mechanism provides better overall stability to the lock. This makes it harder for potential thieves to apply leverage or force to break the lock.
Improved Security: With both ends of the pin locked, it’s less likely that the lock can be twisted or otherwise manipulated to open. This reduces the risk of the lock being easily bypassed.
All in all, a double-locking pin enhances the physical security of your disc-lock by making it more resistant to common attack methods used by thieves, and does a better job of protecting your motorcycle.
More ways to be sneaky with opportunistic thieves:
GPS Tracking: Consider installing a GPS tracking device on your motorcycle. If your bike is stolen, just track its location and inform law enforcement.
Garage or Secure Parking: Park your motorcycle in a garage or secure parking area whenever possible. Thieves are less likely to target motorcycles that are not easily accessible.
Security Markings: It’s easy to mark your motorcycle with a unique identifier, such as a VIN etching or microdot technology. A properly marked motorcycle is easier to identify and recover if stolen.
Cover your Motorcycle: Use a motorcycle cover to keep your bike out of sight and deter potential thieves. A cover also adds an extra layer of protection against tampering.
Ignition Locks: Install an ignition lock or kill switch that prevents the motorcycle from starting without the proper key or code.
Park in Well-Lit Areas: When parking in public places, choose well-lit areas with high foot traffic. Thieves are less likely to target motorcycles in busy, well-lit areas.
Be Vigilant: Always be aware of your surroundings and take note of suspicious individuals or activities near your motorcycle. Report any unusual behavior to authorities.
